FBI (police)
On the day of the terror attack, on September 11, 2001, the FBI, the federal police, instigated what would become the largest criminal investigation in history of the bureau. The criminal investigation assigned 7,000 of its then 11,000 agents on the case, named PENTTBOM (“Pentagon/Twin Towers Bombing Investigation”).
The criminal investigation revealed the identity of the 19 hijackers, and uncovered how the terrorists had planned and carried out the attack.
As is customary with police investigations, the full body of material has not been released to the public. Press Release of September 27, 2001 with photographs of the 19 hijackers Zacarias Moussaoui, known as the “20th hijacker”, declared himself guilty on six counts against him, in connection with his involvement in the terror attack on September 11, 2001. In May, 2006, he received a life sentence. |

A preliminary summary of the criminal investigation has been released, on January 11, 2002.
